Country Puppeteering

Independence Day celebration is a common practice in the Philippines. For decades, we have been free from foreign invaders. July 12, 1898 is the day of our freedom. Heroes sacrificed their own lives for the freedom of this country.

Every 12th day of June, we see flags from corners. Commemoration of heroes happen. No government or private sectors excused. It is considered a National Holiday. But are we culturally independent?

Three countries invaded our country. From the Spaniards to Americans and finally Japanese. Our modern day living is primarily influenced by other countries. Our own identity was mixed with foreign culture.

In today’s time, we choose primarily imported things rather than our own products. We patronize more of out of the country matters. And this thinking is called colonial mentality.

We are free from colonizers. But we became slaves. We cannot see it directly because it is hiding deep beneath of the country’s identity. For decade we became puppet of America. We are an ally to them but we keep on following them and this idea is changing.

The idea is that we are still puppet yet another country is our master, China. Heroes back in the fight fought for every single land in this country. But it is inverted. We fight in peace yet we are facing a gigantic country so we just gave our islands just the Spratly’s Island.

Most of the contractors for infrastructure and employees are Chinese nationals. Even our president is close to the Chinese President. Even transportation and other things are Chinese or American. Our identity and excellence is being covered by foreign influence.

The Independence day on June 12, 1898 was for freedom in war. Today, we are not yet fully independent. There is no war and there is peace. We are not yet finished fighting. We are free from war but not in being a puppet. Just like the virus, we the Filipino people are the hosts and the virus attacks us silently and the symptoms are showing one by one. We are free from wars but not free culturally.
