Are we really prepared?

For centuries, Philippines is constantly hit by various disasters. Typhoon, earthquakes, storm surge, tsunamis and other disasters continues to pull us down. Foreign countries continue to help us.

Typhoons can be predicted by scientists right now. Every year, we are devastated by disasters. But one thing is unpredictable, Earthquake.

Philippines lie in the Pacific Ring of Fire where volcanic eruption and earthquakes happen prevalent. We are struck by this phenomenon for a long period of time. Since the world was created, earthquakes happened.

Our government is devising plans to reduce the damage of this disaster. Casualties continues to threaten and bother us. Earthquake drills are done nationwide. We fear that the Big One will come and struck us. Scientists say that it might happen in Luzon and can happen anytime.

Earthquake drills are simultaneously done to prepare in the incoming earthquakes. Ambulance, firetruck and uniformed personnel are deployed to facilitate in the said drill. Millions of Filipinos participated in the drill to be prepared. But is it effective?

Ever since we are preparing for this destructive force of nature. But are we really prepared? Years ago, Bohol was hit by a great earthquake. People were trapped on their homes. Animals and even humans were buried to death underground.

We are prepared when it is not yet coming. Our preparedness is destroyed when it suddenly comes. Anxiety and nervousness prevails. Our calmness on the drill was replaced with the fear during this earthquake. Our readiness was collapsed and rebuilt with panic. This is the true reason why there are still casualties.

On the other hand, it is still teaching us what to do during this event. There are still casualties but the numbers are further reduced. We don’t know when it will happen but we need to have faith that this might not happen and be ready for whatever shortcomings that will come and to challenge us.
